ENGINEERED DRAINAGE & HYDRAULICS

• We maintain a strict 2% minimum slope on every project. This ensures immediate hydraulic runoff, preventing water and de-icing salts from saturating the concrete matrix and causing surface scaling.

> Pro Tip: Standing water is the primary cause of concrete failure. If a contractor isn't using a laser level to set the forms, the surface will likely develop "birdbaths" that turn into ice patches and salt-damaged pits within two winters.

MAXIMUM COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH

• We utilize a minimum 32 MPa (4,600 PSI) C-2 exposure mix design. This is the structural "gold standard" for exterior flatwork, providing the density required to support high-capacity vehicle loads without structural cracking.

> Pro Tip: While 25 MPa is often used as a residential baseline, it lacks the density required for long-term salt resistance. At KCDL, we exclusively specify a 32 MPa C-2 mix to ensure the chemical durability required for the GTA's harsh winter maintenance cycles.

NON-YIELDING FOUNDATION

• We replace unstable subgrade with 8"–10" of ¾" Clear Crushed Stone, compacted in 4-inch lifts. This creates a non-capillary drainage layer that prevents moisture from "wicking" up under the slab and causing frost heave.

> Pro Tip: Pouring over "screenings" or native soil is a leading cause of sunken surfaces. A clean, crushed stone base is the only engineering solution to ensure the concrete doesn't tilt or shift during Ontario's seasonal freeze-thaw cycles.

CLIMATE-READY AIR ENTRAINMENT

• Our concrete is specified with 5% to 8% Air Entrainment. This creates billions of microscopic "expansion chambers" within the slab, allowing internal moisture to freeze and expand without shattering the concrete matrix.

> Pro Tip: In the Canadian climate, "non-air-entrained" concrete is highly susceptible to flaking. These micro-bubbles act as a pressure-relief system; without them, internal hydraulic pressure will shred the cement paste during the first major cold snap.

REBAR DEPTH & CORROSION CONTROL

• For all high-capacity and structural surfaces, we utilize a grid of 10M deformed rebar secured on high-density chairs. This ensures a minimum of 2 inches of concrete cover, locking the steel in the slab's "tension zone" to provide maximum structural integrity.

> Pro Tip: Rebar only protects the slab if it has proper "cover." When steel is too close to the surface, moisture and salt cause it to rust and expand up to 6x its volume. This internal pressure leads to "spalling," where the concrete is forced apart from the inside.
